DIY Bathroom Makeover Part Two

I went to home depot in search of an affordable way to cover my ugly brown and pink bathroom wall tiles. With $73 left in my budget I went straight to the clearance section to see if I could score a good bargain. Look what I found.

Smart Tiles

For those of you not familiar with this product, Smart tiles are self adhesive wall tiles for the kitchen and bathroom. They are resistant to the heat of stovetops and the humidity of bathrooms. They are removable by simply heating the surface with a hairdryer and peeling them off.

Smart tiles are ideal for my project because it’s easy to install, and not permanent. It’s apartment & landlord friendly, and when we’re ready to move out, it can be removed without a hassle.

I purchased the Lagoon Mosaik tiles for $3.50 each (I love the clearance aisle :)). I didn’t realize the deal I got until I went to the Home Depot in my area and saw that the regular price is $9.99 each or you can get a package of 6 for $49.99. It was my lucky day, by chance I went to a different location than I normally would and got a great deal!

Here is the before pic.

20120829-212710.jpgBecause our bathroom is so small it’s hard to get a pic of the whole bathroom. Sorry.

Materials needed:

  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissor
  • TSP
  • Sponge
  • Dry Rag
  • Painters Tape

I started by washing the tiles with TSP and then wiped the tiles dry. After that I began cutting and pasting.

Here I am hard at work. The boyfriend was only in charge of painting.

Because the smart tiles didn’t curve to cover the top of the original tile (you could still see a bit of brown). I put painters tape on the top and painted it the same color as the wall so that it would blend nicely.

It took me about 45 min to complete. I bought 12 tiles at $3.50 each so with taxes I spent $47.46. That’s a way better deal than 6 for $49.99. I spent less money and got more tiles. YAY!!!

I’ll be tackling the bathroom floor in Part Three.
Take a look at the Smart tile video.
