A Year With Frog And Toad – A Bitter Sweet Opening

Based on the popular series by Arnold Lobel, the musical follows the cheerful Frog and the rather grumpy Toad through four fun-filled seasons. Awaking from hibernation in the spring, the two great friends enjoy planting gardens, swimming in the pond, raking leaves and sledding down the hill.  Along the way they meet new friends and learn the importance of forgiveness. This delightful musical celebrates in the attributes that make each of us different and special.

I know your probably thinking, “this show is for little kids” but seriously it’s a show for ALL ages (I enjoyed!). The Cast was amazing, beautiful costume/set and the music was very catchy. Some songs are permanently stuck in my head now, especially Kevin Dennis’s repeated snail song “I’m a snail with a mail”. I really enjoyed his character, he was funny.

It was  a bitter sweet opening on Thursday night. Artistic director of LKTYP, Allen MacInnis was the replacement for the late Denis Simpson. Simpson died suddenly before the start of rehearsals of a brain hemorrhage.

“Our production was meant to feature a dear friend of mine, Denis Simpson. I was looking forward to watching his Frog be friends with Louise Pitre’s Toad. Denis passed away just days before we were to start rehearsal and the whole Canadian theatre community has suffered a great loss. But the world has lost a person who had the most extraordinary capacity for friendship. Denis had more real-deal empathy than anyone I have ever know and his literally thousands of friends would tell you the same– Denis always had the time to relate to what you were feeling..which brings us back to A Year With Frog And Toad”. – Allen MacInnis.
